Volunteer

We’re looking to onboard some new volunteers!

PURPOSE OF OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

>> Help to fulfill MFD’s commitment to community engagement in the form of hands-on education.  Specifically, humane animal husbandry and sustainable farming.

>> Provide an opportunity for volunteers to be a part of an efficient team with clearly set, achievable, goals.


WHAT DO WE EXPECT?
  1. Three month, one shift per week commitment.
  2. Strong desire to learn humane animal husbandry and sustainable farming practices.
  3. Strong communication skills.  The ability to listen, take direction, and ask questions.
  4. Physical strength and stamina.  The ability to lift 70 pound bales of hay.

WHAT WILL YOU GET?

Months 1-3:

  • Knowledge and practice of basic farm chores.
  • Knowledge and practice of basic animal care.
  • Gain a general understanding of soil health and rotational grazing.
  • General knowledge of preventative goat health care.
  • Gain a general understanding of goat nutrition.
  • Invitation to an evening, off-chore time, goat education session.

Months 4 and on:

  • Knowledge and practice of advanced animal care (vaccinations, prenatal care, kidding, postnatal care).
  • A clear understanding of the cycle of dairy goats (breeding, kidding, lactation).
  • Invitation to an evening, off-chore time, goat education session.

GUIDELINES

Schedule:

  • Orientation (1 offered every 3 months)
  • 20 shifts available per week
  • Fall/Winter AM shift: 7:15a-9:45a  PM shift: 3:30p-5:00p
  • Spring/Summer AM shift: 7:15a- 9:45a  PM shift 4:30p-6:30p

Commitment:

  • 3 month term
  • 1 shift per week

Cancellation policy:  At least 24 hours notice.  If not, volunteer is responsible for finding another volunteer to cover shift.  Three missed shifts (without notice or replacement) and you’re no longer eligible to volunteer.

Age: minimum of 12 years old (must be accompanied by parent if under 16)
